Overdue CLC Write-Up
September 27, 2007 - 12:27am
Calvin and I's trip to South Carolina was a very informative and slightly odd journey to say the least.
Our weekend started with alot of awards ceremonies and talking of scholarship opportunities, all of these outlined in the papers that we brought home. We made it on time and were mostly punctual to every meeting. Coincidentally our first actual information meeting was a " what not to do" meeting and sadly enough some of our pics made it into the presentation. Made us feel really good.
Otherwise the breakout sessions held to be the most useful amongst the whole trip and also the conversations with other chapters from across the nation.
Recruitment : To sum it all up in one or two sentences. " would I want this person to be my actual brother, and would I really be proud to call him that ?" and " What's our situation and is this going to potentially cause a problem with financial and/or grades?" These were two very important questions to sit and ponder since there have ben many " mishaps" in our past that could have been avoided with some more prudent methods of discrimination when attaining new members. Another potential point of interest was the pledge process itself ( which will be enumerated in a later section )
Financials: Most likely the most cutthroat way of approaching overdue brothers and delinquent accounts. To be plain and simple, once a brother/new member reaches a certain threshold of money/time, they get turned into a collection agency and banned from social function INDEFINITELY until all remaining balances are due.
Grades: Same as financials, some chapters are starting to enact the same types of rules used in sports for keeping grades up and keeping the strict guidelines that unlike are broken for "good players". Plain and simple they wanted us and EVERYONE to assess grades and what they currently needed. Mandatory study tables and study sessions are a MUST. These missed meetings/tables could be penalized with a fine/suspension/termination. Why have a few bad sheep ruin it for the rest of us ?, the speaker so eloquently put it.
Sing: LoL, you'll have to dig the horrors of that from Calvin's memory. :D
Brotherhood: Very short because of a long new member education meeting, but short and dry, it was all about keeping activities up and to stay together ad actually BE a brotherhood instead of getting your letters and running around trying to get laid all the time. ( Which there's nothing wrong with that if you actually like VD.)
New Member Education: It was emphasized that even though it may seem like an easy process or a moot idea, but the actual process of becoming a new member should not HAVE to last more than however long it takes them to learn the by-laws and to know all their information. The speaker said that ideally, we could have upwards of two to three pledge classes per semester if we were to follow this system. but the was a caveat to the madness, which would be not being able to root out the problem brothers before they're even in. We also recived a packet of 150 things every Theta Chi should know. We have copies of all the papers and all handouts we received already in Pres. Brand's possession already
The CLC was a very informative and very diverse convention, that I honestly wish we could have had more brothers attend since there was so much to listen to and only two people to run around as fast as they could and try to get the most important meetings. I would recommend 3-4 for a large convention like that just due to the fact that it would make information gathering alot easier
The convention also let us be informed of our progress and that we are VERY close to being on a green light status with the National Headquarters. They were EXPECTING our chapter to be the mess ups, they were banking on us to make mistakes, but fortunately we made a good impression and did what we had to do without a hitch.( other than Calvin almost shearing off the tip of his finger )
Email Back if there are any questions :D
