Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Center dome now being inflated at Edinboro University

Edinboro University’s $5 million Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Center, a freestanding, 85,000 square-foot structure, is now being inflated across from the McComb Fieldhouse.

After several test inflations earlier today, contractors agreed that weather conditions are now optimal for the estimated two- to three-hour inflation time this afternoon.

The dome’s fabric material, which has been in place for several weeks, weighs some 24 tons. When fully inflated, the dome, which will contain a regulation running track and various sports courts, will stand about six stories tall.  It will be used for myriad campus activities, including commencement exercises and various displays, and will become the region’s largest facility of its kind.

The dome is named for Edinboro alumnus Mike S. Zafirovski, the CEO of  Nortel, whose generous contribution made construction of the facility possible. Edinboro University President Jeremy D. Brown and Athletic Director Bruce Baumgartner will be available for interviews at the site for about one hour, starting at 1:30 p.m.

“This is another example of the great things happening at Edinboro University,” President Brown said. “We’re delighted this facility will benefit not just our many athletes, but also many students as well.”
